The closure period for sending records to The National Archives has been reduced from 30 years to 20 years and organisations are now in a transition period.
Many Government departments are recognising the difficulty of capturing, and preparing documents for transfer, from the early 2000s due to the new approaches to handling electronic data.
- Legacy systems have since been decommissioned
- Data is residing in multiple platforms
- The data contains a great deal of redundant information
- The data has not been indexed and so is not easily searchable
